Lucy + Jorge Orta’s inaugural exhibition at Mouraux Durand-Ruel Gallery, New York, brings together a compelling body of watercolour drawings and editions under the title The World We Keep Afloat.

In the Antarctica and Amazonia series, the artists’ expeditions to the two biomes document critical ecosystems, transforming firsthand immersive field research into evocative warnings about biodiversity loss and ecological collapse. The exhibition begins with works on paper from the artists’ expedition to the Antarctic, addressing environmental conditions and human survival in adverse situations. The Amazonia Expedition Drawings draw our attention to the interconnected nature of ecology, highlighting the fragility of the Amazon rainforest and the necessity to safeguard biodiversity worldwide, through abundant imaginary and real flowers, seeds, and figures cohabiting a vast spatial plane. In the Connector series, modular forms of architecture recast community as an expansive, interconnected network; a living system maintained through steady, reciprocal solidarity among human populations and the ecosystems that support them.

The gallery will be hosting a number of events during the exhibition, click in the link for further information.
