The Lost Species: from the everyday to the extraordinary is an illustrated handbook and mask-making kit designed by Lucy Orta, with texts by historian Sophie Page.
Animals are an integral part of our everyday lives, yet we are losing the deeper cultural and spiritual connections we once had with them. Why do we treat pigeons and other creatures as pests, destroy wildlife habitats, and use harmful chemicals in farming? Many species have vanished or are disappearing from our landscapes. Some, like wolves, bears and lynxes, may never overcome the obstacles to reintroduction. Others, such as beavers, wild boar and white-tailed eagles, can flourish if we rewild our landscapes and repair damaged ecosystems.
The Lost Species Handbook, with beautiful watercolour drawings by Lucy, introduces thirty-seven mammals, birds, reptiles and insects, alongside imaginary creatures that evoke the social and symbolic bonds humans and animals once shared. The Lost Species Mask Kit contains pattern templates for a selection of these species, encouraging young people to reflect on their relationship with the natural world—on what has been lost, what may disappear, and how we might imagine more positive futures.
By learning about the relationships humans have had with wild and domesticated, real and mythical, common and rare animals, readers gain a more holistic understanding of the environment’s rich history and its challenging present. These resources encourage young people to embrace their creative potential and consider their ecological responsibility in helping to shape a better world.
