Act fifty of 70 x 7 The Meal is a propsl for public installation in the form of an open-air luncheon for 8,000 guests that weaves through the streets of the City of London. Commencing at the foot of the Tate Modern, spanning the Millennium Bridge, winding up the streets to Saint Paul's Cathedral, then crossing to King and Queen Street. The immense dining table, several miles long, ends in the historic centre of London infront of the Guildhall.
The project was first published in 'New Thinking in Public Art' (IXIA and Article Press), to explore the role of public art and to understand the commissioning process involved in new forms of public engagement. The publication offers detailed descriptions of the methodologies Lucy + Jorge Orta employ to stage mass-gatherings and engage with diverse audiences.
