Act fifty of 70 x 7 The Meal is a public installation in the form of an open-air luncheon for approximately 8,000 guests that weaves through the streets of the City of London. Commencing at the foot of the Tate Modern, spanning the Millennium Bridge, winding up the streets to Saint Paul's Cathedral, then crossing to King and Queen Street. The immense dining table, several miles long, ends in the historic centre of London infront of the Guildhall.
The project was first published in New Thinking in Public Art (IXIA and Article Press), to expand on the role of public art and to understand the commissioning process involved in new forms of public engagement. The publication offers detailed descritpions of the methodologies Lucy + Jorge Orta employ to stage these mass-gatherings and to engage with diverse audiences.
