Lucy Orta

Lucy Orta est née en 1966 à Sutton Coldfield, Royaume-Uni.

Diplômée en stylisme en 1989 à la Nottingham Trent University, Lucy Orta se tourne vers les arts plastiques dès 1992 suite à son arrivée à Paris et à sa rencontre avec l’artiste Jorge Orta. Son œuvre sculpturale interroge les frontières entre le corps et l’architecture et explore les enjeux sociaux qu’ils ont en commun, comme la protection, la communication et l’identité. Elle utilise aussi bien le dessin que la sculpture-textile, la performance, la vidéo et la photographie pour construire une œuvre singulière. Ses séries emblématiques comprennent Refuge Wear et Body Architecture (1992-1998), des architectures portables et autonomes représentant les questions liées à la survie et la mobilité des personnes ; Nexus Architecture (1994-2002), la mise en scène du lien social à travers des interventions et performances ; ou encore Life Guards (2004-en cours), une réflexion sur le corps comme structure de soutien métaphorique.

Ses œuvres ont fait l’objet d’expositions importantes au Musée d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (1994) ; à la Weiner Secession, Autriche (1999) ; au Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australie (1999) ; au University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, USA, pour laquelle elle reçoit le prix pour les Arts Visuels de la Fondation Andy Warhol (2001) ; et au Barbican Centre, Londres (2005). Elle est la femme la plus jeune à qui Phaidon Press London consacre une monographie dans la collection des artistes contemporains en 2003.

Parallèlement à son travail d’artiste, Lucy Orta cofonde avec Li Edelkoort et dirige de 2002 à 2005, le programme de Master, Man & Humanity, à la Design Academy Eindhoven qui a pour ambition de stimuler le design social et durable. Elle est nommée professeur de recherches au London College of Fashion en 2002 et a le privilège d’occuper la chaire inaugurale Art and the Environment de la University of the Arts London depuis 2013. En reconnaissance à sa contribution aux arts visuels, elle reçoit à titre honorifique un Master en Arts de la Notthingham Trent University et un Doctorat en Lettres de la University of Brighton.

En 1992, Lucy Orta fonde le Studio Orta avec son partenaire, l'artiste argentin Jorge Orta. Depuis, ils travaillent en collaboration sous la dénomination Lucy + Jorge Orta.
