The body of work Clouds has grown from Orta’s sustained investigation of water, to embody the fragile nature of one of the most vital resources. The cloud is a mega-thermodynamic machine aimed at recycling and distributing water on our planet. The artists began sculpting recycled water bottles following a residency in Cairo (2009). There they encountered the now threatened Zabaleen communities who live as the unofficial ‘garbage people’ of the city, recycling 80% of what they collect. Clouds draws a correlation among the lack of water in the world and its privatization—represented by organic formations of bundled up plastic bottles—and the parallel economies, entire cities of people surviving on waste.
